For Parents

  • First session in a public place

Always meet a new tutor for the first time in a public location such as a library, cafe, or community centre. Never at a private residence for the first session.

  • Stay for the first session

For children under 16, we strongly recommend a parent or guardian stays present for the entire first tutoring session.

  • Verify credentials

Ask to see the tutor's Working With Children Check card before the first session. Check the card number on the official government verification website.

  • Use a public or supervised space

For ongoing sessions, choose locations like school libraries, public libraries, community centres, or university study rooms where other people are present.

  • Trust your child's feedback

Regularly ask your child how sessions are going. If they express discomfort for any reason, take it seriously and address it immediately.

  • Report concerns immediately

If you have any concerns about a tutor's behaviour, report it immediately through TutorLook and contact local authorities if needed.

For Tutors

  • Obtain a Working With Children Check

All tutors working with minors must hold a current Working With Children Check (or equivalent in your state/country). Upload proof to your profile.

  • Tutor in public or visible spaces

Always conduct sessions in public places like libraries, cafes, or community centres. If at a family's home, ensure a parent/guardian is present.

  • Maintain professional boundaries

Keep all interactions professional. Do not connect with students on personal social media. Do not offer rides or meet outside of scheduled sessions.

  • Never be alone in a closed room

Ensure doors remain open or sessions occur in areas with visibility. This protects both the student and the tutor.

  • Document and communicate

Keep parents informed about session content, progress, and any concerns. Provide regular updates on what was covered and how the student is progressing.
